Shooting Expeditions

Texas Bayou

  • November 25, 2024

I had a couple days to do some shooting in the Texas Bayou between shows in Louisville and Houston this Fall.  I spent most of my time at Mill Pond in Caddo Lake State Park, as I wanted to shoot from shore, and this little pond is covered with Bald Cypress trees of every size. It’s also quite sheltered, so there are reflections in the water most of the time. I got there late in the afternoon, and spent the evening ankle deep in mud, observing the light and exploring angles and compositions.  I arrived before sunrise the next day, and managed to get to all the spots I had planned to shoot.  There was some light fog over the water in the morning which added mood to the scene.  Blue hour–the time when you can see but the sun is still below the horizon at sunrise and sunset–gave the whole swamp and amazing blue hue which enhanced the surreal mood of the area. My favorite images from the shoot came from this time.  Overall, I really enjoyed this experience, as it was unlike any other photo excursion I’ve been on. I usually find grand, expansive landscapes to shoot, so focusing on a smaller area and working on closer, texture based compositions was a blast.
